...that on this day in 1875, British swimmer Matthew Webb swam from Dover, England, to Cape Gris Nez near Calais, France? He did the swim in 21 hours and 45 minutes, thus becoming the first person to swim the English Channel. Today people swim the channel in less than half that time.
