... that today is the U.S. Speed Limit's Birthday? In 1652, New Amsterdam (now New York City) passed the first speed limit law in the colonies. The decree stated that: "no wagons, carts or sleighs shall be run, rode or driven at a gallop" at the risk of incurring a fine starting at "two pounds Flemish," or about $150 in today's currency.
