... that today is Pacific Ocean Discovery Day? In 1513, Vasco Nunez de Balboa, a Spanish explorer, became the first European to see the Pacific Ocean from the Americas. He had crossed the Isthmus of Panama to make the discovery and he named it Mar del Sur (South Sea). Trivia fans: The Pacific Ocean is the world's largest body of water. It encompasses a third of the Earth's surface, having an area of 69.4 million square miles, significantly larger than Earth's entire landmass, with room for another Africa to spare.
