In 1931, the British Parliament passed the Statute of Westminster to recognize the independence of many countries in the British Commonwealth, including Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, Newfoundland, and South Africa. Each country was left to pass their own legislation on constitutional matters in order to ensure that there were no legal gaps.
